Bangladesh has hung Mohammad Kamaruzzaman on Saturday for overseeing a massacre during the 1971 separation movement, masterminded and backed by India.
Kamaruzzaman was the third most senior person in the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami party. Kamaruzzaman was convicted of mass murder, torture and abduction of thousands of people during the separation movement.
The UN urged Bangladesh on Wednesday not to carry out the death sentence and said he had not been given a fair trial. Kamaruzzaman, 63, had refused to ask the Bangladeshi President for a pardon.
